Oh, Fer Cryin’ Out Loud

A trigger warning bot.

A new trigger-warning detector which sound alarms when it detects offensive speech has been unveiled at Dubai Design Week.

The Themis is a lamp-sized device intended to ‘moderate’ debate in classrooms and universities and ‘manifest political correctness’ into a product.

The small device could even be used to police language at dinner parties and family gatherings and its developers have said it hopes that Themis will encourage ‘self-critique’.

The developers can stick their product where the sun don’t shine. This is not “self critique” this is actively encouraging self censorship.

Zinah Issa, who unveiled the device in Dubai, told The Telegraph: ‘Through the use of speech recognition and sound sensors we were able to program Themis to detect offensive terms – racial slurs, offensive jokes – through the microphone.

‘Extremely bothersome alarms last approximately two minutes, after which Themis turns off, allowing an open, understanding discussion among people on the possible trigger matter and the potential reasons behind Themis’s activation’.

Go fuck yourself. Seriously, this is an appalling idea. Dreadful. I know it’s a cliché, but 1984 was a warning, not a fucking instruction manual.

  1. I think I will put this on my Christmas list just so that I can see how quickly I can trigger it in my normal day. Should go off before the second cup of coffee…….

Then again, imagine the YouTube videos of people having one of these then reading Classic literature out loud. You know, the Bible. Or the Koran…….

  2. I was thinking that it will make it easier to tell the Eloi from the Morlocks. You know right away that anyone who has such a device is toxic and needs to be cut out of your life. Other than, as Altoban says, those who have one just to see how quickly they can set it off.

  3. New party game.
See who can achieve the most bleeps without deviation (?), hesitation or repetition, or even better a constant beeeeeeeeeeeep.
Or even find out what the program’s prejudice’s are. Because it will have them.

  4. Is it programmable? I’ve had enough conversations with woke idiots, climate cultists and deranged misandrists that a device to shut them up when they start preaching had a certain attraction.

  5. Best comment on the news story: “We already have something that emits a loud, irritating noise whenever anyone says anything it finds offensive – it’s called the Labour Party.”

As a bonus, “Now this is a thing, will we finally find out what the three seashells are for?”

  6. So when the dinner guests attempt “…an open, understanding discussion… on the possible trigger matter..” it erm triggers??
Pity, who wouldn’t want to enjoy a dinner party discussing the use of correct pronouns, and rocking with laughter at the latest Nish Kumar joke?
