Here We Go Again

Javid is pressing the panic button. Twat.

new Covid variant poses a “substantial risk to public health” and jabs may be less effective, Sajid Javid has warned.

The Health Secretary delivered an update to the Commons after the UK announced it was suspending flights from six southern African countries amid fears over the B.1.1.529 strain.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the UK was “buying time” by adding South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Namibia to its travel red list, with arrivals ordered to stay in quarantine hotels from 4am on Sunday.

British health officials are scrambling to identify people who arrived in the UK in recent days from these countries.

Mr Javid told MPs: “We are concerned that this new variant may pose substantial risk to public health. The variant has an unusual large number of mutations.”

It’s a coronavirus. This is what conrona viruses do. It’s what they have always done. It’s why the flu vaccine is so hit and miss. For the vast majority – vaccinated or unvaccinated – it is an unpleasant illness, but neither serious nor fatal. So let us just get on with out lives and leave us alone.

  1. If they took it seriously, they would cut off flights NOW, not in two days time – must allow the ‘special’ ones time to get back!

  2. I don’t think the public will support any more lockdowns. I haven’t supported any of this rubbish.

  3. I thought that this was amusing. Watching Pointless, there is a round on the subject of newly coined words that have been recently added to the Oxford English Dictionary. One clue referred to a political term for a situation characterized by a series of blunders and miscalculations. Well done if you got the answer, it only scored 3 points.

    Omnishambles.

Can we think of any examples?

  4. Have any of these people got any sense? It is well known that these viruses mutate all the time and therefore our immune systems change to combat them. This has been true since living organisms began to exist. We have all had and beaten all sorts of illness and survived, some not even really noticing that they have had an infection ( Typhoid Mary a classic example )For God’s sake let us get back to normal.

  5. Corona virus is a single stranded RNA virus. It is always mutating as it converts its RNA to DNA, gets the human cells to replicate the DNA, converts it to RNA and it gets packaged and released. It is the constant trascriptions that cause the mutations. We have known this ‘in the trade’ for well over 50 years. It’s in the text books. Why is it such a surprised for the government ministers?

  6. The first South African doctor to alert the authorities about patients with the omicron variant has told The Telegraph that the symptoms of the new variant are unusual but mild.

Dr Angelique Coetzee said she was first alerted to the possibility of a new variant when patients in her busy private practice in the capital Pretoria started to come in earlier this month with Covid-19 symptoms that did not make immediate sense.

They included young people of different backgrounds and ethnicities with intense fatigue and a six-year-old child with a very high pulse rate, she said. None suffered from a loss of taste or smell.

“Their symptoms were so different and so mild from those I had treated before,” said Dr Coetzee, a GP for 33 years who chairs the South African Medical Association alongside running her practice.
