Oh, For God’s Sake

It’s an historical piece. It is of its time. Grow up, for crying out loud.

In 2020, the members of the Tate’s ethics committee said they “were unequivocal in their view that the imagery of the work is offensive”.

Only if you are easily offended. It’s a painting. A painting that was of its time. We think differently now, so adults will look at it with its period in mind. That is, the grown ups in the room. The eternal infants will screech about offence.

The saving grace being that they don’t plan to remove it.

Art critic Waldemar Januszczak said on Twitter that it was “about time” the gallery took action, but that it was “a muddled, time-wasting response”.

He wrote: “Talk, talk, talk as usual. Just cover up the damn things. Or let me loose in there with a chisel!”

Because a century old piece offends his delicate sensibilities, he thinks it should be hidden or destroyed. See what I mean about eternal infants?

  1. Hmmnn, what can I find offensive today? Trust me…I WILL find something offensive and demand it be removed, destroyed, burnt, obliterated, expunged from history, chucked in a skip… just make MY world perfect, or else!
    *sigh*
