Veganism is a minority sport.

A buffet for a Remembrance Sunday event did not go down well with guests, who left almost all the vegan options untouched, a council report said.

About 80 people of all ages – mainly residents – attended the civic event on 13 November in Cambridge.

Cambridge City Council said it was “committed to sustainable food” but conceded that most of its vegan food at the event ended up in the bin.

While the sample size is small, it’s probably a fair reflection of the population at large. I recall a couple of years ago when Subway announced vegan meatballs. They were offering free tasters and no one would try them. They literally couldn’t give them away.

In this case, Cambridge council has discovered that all the bullshit about saving the planet and cow farts causing warble gloaming doesn’t cut it with the public. They stepped outside their echo chamber and got a sharp dose of reality.

It will now consider serving only 25% vegan options at such events.

At least they are responding to their mistake even if 25% is probably still too high given the only around 10% actually ate this stuff – So it looks like they got their answer and that answer was ‘no thanks.’ However upon digging deeper,

The committee agreed to take a phased approach offering plant based food at future civic events, with 25 per cent of the food being plant based options in 2023, increasing to 50 per cent in 2024, 75 per cent in 2025, and 100 per cent in 2026.

They really can’t take ‘no’ for an answer, can they?

The report, due before the council’s Environment and Community Scrutiny Committee on Thursday, said a pilot scheme offered plant-based catering to “investigate the practicalities of using civic events to promote and showcase plant-based food options”.

That is not their role. The response to the rejection is typical of the town hall bullies all over the country. Over promoted little dictators who think that it is their place to boss us about and tell us how to live our lives, when their role is to empty the bins, fill in the potholes and keep the streetlamps lit.

Councillor Richard Swift said: “I think the whole emphasis must be on making plant based food delicious, making something so delicious people are not told to eat it, they choose to eat it. Talking about it in a dry academic way is almost missing the point. We cannot force people to eat food they do not want to eat, the task of us is to make it so good people want to eat it without being told.”

The fact that Swift says this tells us much – they would love to be able to force us to eat it. That or bugs.

  1. Perhaps explaining what exactly it is would help. They use the gluten from plants, a method that the Chinese use in one of their dishes. Absolutely no good if you are gluten intolerant or allergic to gluten. People won’t eat when they don’t know what they are eating.

    • Oh I can assure you that there is a guillotine waiting. Just because it isn’t currently serving customers in the middle of Parliament Square Garden, it is certainly waiting.

We’re just in that awkward intervening period where it’s too late to fix things but too early to start executing them for their crimes.

  2. I’ve been in council meetings like that 15-odd years ago. There would be a random selection of “foreign muck” with no ordinary food. And it would be cold, so there was no smell to tell what it was, and being polite you don’t want to take an exploritory bite out of something only to have to spit it out and hide the remains. So it went uneaten.
Even when they tried to provide a selection of boring sandwiches, you’d bite into something masquarding as a cheese sandwich and get a mouthful of some foul concoction.

    • J.G.Harston: I can understand the council having some foreign food on whilst the immigrants are here but to exclude local food is not on and not the done thing.

  3. They are trying to alter reality to coincide with their fantasy. I’ll take a punt for 100 quid that reality wins. Every time.

    • Yep. The same thing applies when you try to get rid of coal and gas and instead rely on solar panels and windmills for your electricity. You end up having to bribe your customers to stop using your product.

  4. I have a prepayment meter, it’s supose to be more expensive but I’ve paid hardly any more for gas and the electricity funds from the government has kept my electricity meter high. I pay for what I use when I use it. I’m in control and if its costing me more how come I’m the only one at work not struggling. Today I need to put more gas on, go to the garage and top up the card. Its due to the really cold snap. During the summer I put only enough on the gas to cover the standing charge. They can keep their smart meters, I’ll hold off as long as I can thank you.

  5. Some plant based food IS delicious…. ratatouille, for instance. Leek and potato soup is a favourite. I’ve even partaken of the odd falafel or two.

But ‘plant based’ mock food is an abomination. No-one wants to eat something masquerading as something it isn’t.

  6. I love plant based food. Chips and peas are great. So mix with a little real food like Fish and we have a winner.

I liked it when he said ‘ the task of us is to make it so good people want to eat it without being told.’ When did that go in the job description of these littel tyrants.

Can we have that carved in stone above the entrance to every Town Hall and City Chambers in the country, please?
