Blackwashing Cleopatra

Ah, yes, of course

Adding of accusations of black-washing: ‘It’s sort of just a made-up term, like people just coined it all of a sudden for their agenda.

You mean like whitewashing, or blackface – or on another theme, transphobia, islamophobia, homophobia and so on? It seems two can play this game and they don’t like it when their own weapons are used against them.

The show, which was released on May 10, features claims that Cleopatra VII was black with ‘curly hair’ and a historian saying ‘I remember my grandmother saying to me: I don’t care what they tell you in school, Cleopatra was black.’

No, she wasn’t. It was the fashion in ancient Egypt to wear wigs. That was what the back curly hair was about.

She said: ‘In the interests of historical accuracy, it would be great to know either way but I don’t know that it matters any more than any of the other things that we want to talk about with regards to who she was.’

We know exactly what she was like. She was Macedonian-Greek. Consequently, she was not black. That these people are so thick that they either don’t know the history or are too stupid to check just means that I refuse to take them seriously and I refuse also to watch this cack.

  1. There was a time when no one would have cared. Racism was close to being consigned to history among the developed nations. Now it’s dying embers are being fanned back to life.

On the Not Always Right site there was a recent story about a Tex Mex restaurant that was run by ethnically Chinese people. A guy came in and was confused because he was expecting to be able to order Chinese food. The worst that could be said about him was that he was a bit slow to catch on but he was immediately condemned as a racist scumbag in the comments. To be fair, other commenters did point out that a restaurant run by Chinese people usually do sell Chinese food so it was a fairly reasonable to assume that this one did if you weren’t paying too much attention.

  2. I read that Egypt was taking Netfux to court for maliciously
distorting Egyptian history. Have not heard much recently.
Eny fule nkow that she wor Chinese. See those slitty eyes.

    • It’s an Egyptian lawyer who is suing them. But the Egyptian government has made it quite clear that they are not happy with this bullshit.

  3. Up here in Jockland all chippies are run and staffed by Chinese or ex-pat Italians. And the fush suppers are great from both.
Once lived in Stevenage and was amazed to be served at the chippy by a Chinese lady with a real Govan (Glesgie) accent. Fush suppers were great.
But in the meedja the Chinese are invisible.

    • It’s “Glesca” to the locals. That said, you’re right about the ‘Tallies – they had a stranglehold on the market at one time, especially in the west – but I haven’t seen a Chinese chippy yet.

  4. “But in the meedja the Chinese are invisible.”

That would be because they just get on with their lives, work hard and don’t go around constantly screaming about discrimination.

  5. I’m sorry, I’ve probably posted this before but it’s one of my favourite responses to these accusations of racism. Is Charles Dance playing Martin Luther King a GOOD THING?

    • I want to see Mel Gibson playing Chaka Zulu – he did well in Braveheart so he’d be a good fit for the role.

No backface, though. That would be racist and cultural appropriation or something along those lines.

  6. Her daughter, Cleopatra Selene a very intelligent and nice looking woman (according to descriptions at the time), married a Berber Prince (Narsus I think his name was). Neither of them were black. Cleopatra Selene was a Roman Citizen too. Her dad was Marcus Antonius
