Um…

Really?

Israeli troops could be planning to disable Hamas tunnels and trap the terrorists underground using innovative ‘sponge bombs’ (graphic left). How to deal with concealed fighters hiding in the myriad of tunnels (top and bottom right; inset) under Gaza will be one the main concerns for the Israel Defence Force (IDF) when they begin their long-promised ground offensive into the besieged city. And according to some reports, a secret new weapon dubbed the ‘sponge bomb’ could see deployment for the first time.

So secret, it’s in the Daily Mail.

  1. So. Kind of like a binary bomb, but without the deadly bit. I’m assuming that the Israelis have qualms about just gassing them in the tunnels like rats, but blocking the tunnels and letting them suffocate is somehow different.

    Hmmm.

        • Alexander got there before me. The likelihood of the hostages being alive is low. Hamas doesn’t need to keep them alive to play their mind games. They are relying on the Israelis having a moral conscience, which is a weakness they will exploit. So what would I do? I’d go ahead and wipe Hamas off the face of the earth. I’d take the risk that there was any remnant of humanity in my enemy and that they were actually keeping those people alive. Again, as Alexander says below, it’s a matter of numbers. Sacrifice 200 for the sake of millions. Political and military leaders have had to make that difficult decision through centuries. This one is no different.

  2. If the Israeli Forces have any sense, they’ll be doing what the Russians are doing in Ukraine.
A drone loiters high enough not to be noticed over an area suspected to have bunkers. The comings and goings of people are mapped, so the entrances of the bunkers are known.
Then small drones with bombs on are launched, a few dozen or so. These carry explosives and fly right into the tunnels.
    Kaboom.
    Bye bye tunnel.

Saves on soldiers having to go near and permanently collapses the tunnel entrance.
Not great for rescuing a hostage mind, but neither is blocking the entrance with sponge…

    Plenty of videos on Telegram.
Having watched a few, being an infantry man in a modern war just looks like a complete load of suck.
Mines, drones, missiles. All just come and randomly blow you up without you knowing about it.

Think I’ll sit out WW3 thanks

  3. Don’t fuck about. Bunker busters and mustard gas seem in order.

    As for the 200 hostages?

Let’s get real, except for a miracle, you died the day you refused to resist, and 200 v 14 million, not worth thinking about. Of course, I would think differently 7f one of them was mine.

    But war is hell.

Kill them. Kill them all. And God forbid the Samson option (google it) I hear it’s on the table.

    • Must admit I agree with you Alex. I can’t see any other way to do it. Of course if my hide was at stake, I’m sure I’d feel very differently and scream very loudly indeed.

But the war between Israel and Hamas is their business. The question is what should our policies be.

Well for one, I’d give absolutely no aid to Hamas/Gaza whatever you call it. And two, I’d take not a single one of the Gazans as asylum seekers/refugees/immigrants. I agree with the Egyptians and Jordanians on this one.

But I’m sure the push to dump all two and a half million of the Gazans on us will soon become irresistible. As will the push to flood the place with our taxes, to keep the war going on and on like the one in Yemen.
