Moral Equivalence

Can I just make a brief point here regarding my recent posts regarding the Israel/Hamas conflict?

I have always taken a liberal approach to comments here and it’s always been interesting seeing what other people think, but do us all a favour before commenting, and have some grasp of the subject matter. Anyone claiming that there is some sort of moral equivalence between these two warring factions simply tells me that they don’t know what they are talking about.

I’ve been paying attention to this one since 1967, when I was old enough to be aware of world events. Since then, I’ve looked into the history around the creation of the Israeli state as I wanted to understand why people thought that Israel was in breach of international law. I know my history here.

If you were to point out that the settlers on the west bank have behaved badly by settling on disputed territory (and here, the international law argument has some merit), I’d at least know you have a grasp of the tensions in the area. That said, nothing they have done justifies the current pogrom that is spreading across the world. Nothing.

Israel is fighting a defensive war, yet if you listen to many comments on this, they are not supposed to be doing so. Every country in the world, faced with a hostile invasion will defend itself and justifiably so. Israel doesn’t start these wars, it just finishes them. Indeed, if you have been paying attention, they have repeatedly tried to negotiate a peaceful settlement. They have offered land for peace and every time they have been rejected. This is because the Palestinians don’t want peace, they want ethnic cleansing and nothing less will do. There is no moral equivalence between the two sides. None.

Hamas has been continuously launching rockets into civilian areas, while the international community continues to pour aid money into their hands and in so doing, funds it. Instead of spending it on infrastructure and making life better for the inhabitants, Hamas uses it to build their war machine. They are the ones building bases under hospitals, they are the ones using human shields, they are the ones preventing civilians from evacuating the war zone. They are the ones who think that rape and dismemberment are suitable weapons of war. Hamas and Hamas alone is responsible for every casualty on both sides here.

To suggest that there is a moral equivalence between the IDF and these savages, is to display a remarkable level of ignorance or naivete. Take your pick, but perhaps don’t waste my time or yours by leaving ahistorical bollocks in the comments section?

  1. Have you ever watched the ‘History Debunked’ channel on YouTube? Simon does little talks on the subject, and points out that although Gaza is now effectively a ‘prison camp’, it’s the antics of Hamas that make it so. Until Hamas came along, he states, there were plans to develop holiday resorts and a fishing port in the area. Which would have helped lift the locals out of poverty.

Hamas caused the destruction of the holiday facilities (Swimming pools etc) and so condemned the local Arab population to living in a self created hell hole. They are the authors of their own undoing.

  2. Crikey! I would not ordinarily quote myself, I consider that crass, but in this instance and in the spirit of simple clarification…
“I can’t unravel the many centuries of disputes, defense, attacks, land grabs, terrorism, political stand-offs etc”
I am not uneducated in the history of any war, as a member of a multi-generational military family, the curriculum regarding such matters that I studied at the Duke of Yorks Royal Military School was fairly comprehensive.
My faux naivete was measured out of respect for the fact that helpless innocent people are always the victims of conflict no matter how barbaric the tactics employed, not the people who actually order the use of arms against opponents regardless of historical context, political complexities or ‘rules of engagement'(read: international law).
Such notions as remembering the true nature of the victims of conflict on November 11th may well be childish though, as Stonyground was so very kind enough to point out.
LR I will, if you allow, continue to value your take on modern life and very occasionally post in the comments section. Should you require greater self-censorship on my behalf, it’s your place, your rules, just let me know.

    • I am not suggesting self censorship. I am, however suggesting that you apply a little common sense before making comments that are demonstrably false. In this instance, your suggestion that the IDF is in some way responsible for civilian deaths. It isn’t, Hamas is. Hamas is responsible for every death that has occurred since they chose to engage in their act of savagery. I also objected to being referred to as a cunt because I chose to side with the good guys.

      • Ah, it’s this idiot ‘Guy’ who yesterday described dead members of Hamas as ‘innocent’. ‘Innocent’? Hamas are terrorists who want to destroy Israel. They don’t care about Palestinians (did they ever?) whom they use as human shields, and their leaders are billionaires who live in Qatar.

So, Hamas are not ‘innocent’. Frankly, the more dead members of Hamas the better. They can’t be reasoned with or negotiated with. Wipe them out. All of them.

  3. This type of person is a virtue signalling fuckwit who lacks critical thinking skills. So they just parrot the latest fashionable line usually in their echo chamber (mostly Twatter).
