We Are Doomed

Doomed, I tell you.

On New Year’s Eve, Meagan Howard waited outside a Target in Louisiana to buy this season’s most coveted accessory: a shiny pink travel tumbler called the Starbucks x Stanley Quencher. When the doors opened, Howard took off like a race horse leaving the starting gate, running as fast as her Uggs could carry her. Then the 33-year-old felt herself slipping, ultimately face-planting on the cold tile floor.

“My mom saw me fall down, and she said it took a while for me to get back up,” Howard, who is a first-grade teacher, said. “But it’s worth it, I think. I got the cup.”

The cup she got was a limited-edition version of a 40oz stainless steel, vacuum-insulated jug with a straw made by Stanley, the 110-year-old brand usually associated with outdoor enthusiasts or dads with boats. Though they’re sold out now, Starbucks x Stanley Quencher mania lives on in TikTok videos shot on New Year’s Eve, showing grown adults stampeding toward displays in Targets across the country.

How did a $45 water jug spark such chaos? (And since when do water jugs cost $45?)

This is what humanity has sunk to. A supposedly grown woman who has responsibility for educating the next generation behaving like a child. I despair.

  1. Well we aren’t all as stupid and shallow as this. There are lots of really clever people doing really things too.

  2. Just remember IQ is a measure of intelligence, IQ of 100 is the average so half the world has less than this. The US Army found that people with an IQ of less than 80 are utterly useless for the service. They aren’t even any use as cannon fodder.

But its a well known fact that IQ is racist so don’t pay any attention to me

    • I’ve not done one of those for years. Last time I did, it was around 140. However, there’s a caveat, you can practice and increase your score as a result.

      • Recognising that, with practice, an area of your own performance can be improved is a sign of intelligence.

    • The US Marines had to lower the IQ requirements in the 90’s because so many aspirants failed at the first hurdle.

    • Strictly speaking, the reason why half the global population has an IQ less than 100 is because 100 is also the median IQ.
