The Irish people are more conservative than their government, it seems.
Ireland has voted to reject Government proposals to change the Constitution that would have widened the definition of family to include families which are not based on marriage.
The proposal would have expanded marriage to include ‘durable relationships’ such as cohabiting couples but it was rejected by 67.7 per cent.
The public also rejected a proposal which would have changed language about a mother’s ‘duty in the home’ with a clause to recognise care provided by family members to one another.
But this was also overwhelmingly defeated, with 73 per cent voting against it.
Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the electorate had given the Government ‘two wallops’ as he conceded early on Saturday that the proposals for change had been rejected.
Given this overwhelming rejection, I wonder how that twat Varadkar is prime minister. But then, look what we’ve got.
Why does their government need to be sticking its nose into these matters anyway? Everywhere governments are into everyone’s personal affairs where they have no business.
The main reasons for the defeat were government complacency and replacing the existing wording with expressions that even confused the Attorney General. “Strive” and “durable relationships” are expressions even the courts would find confusing.
Varadkar is an idiot and the government got what it deserved.
It’s always hard to flog constitutional change when all you’ve got to replace it with is mealy mouthed progressive garbage.
The queer Indian cosplaying as “Irish” Taoiseach knows he is way out of his depth and drowning, but still won’t quit.
It’s a terrible warning not to ignore those here who talk so blithely of constitutional change and wanting to “join the 21st century” with a cover all, written constitution.
In the case of Ireland though, does it really matter given the toytown-austria-hungary “constitution” that trumps it?
Will they be made to keep voting until they give the “right” answer?

Here’s the best explanation of the cock-up by Varadkar the Peacock Taioseach from one of the few independent news outlets operating in Ireland.
https://gript.ie/the-political-class-not-the-public-didnt-understand-the-referendums/
What you have to understand is that there is no political Opposition in the country – just huge numbers of NGOs and a media, like the BBC in Blighty, that pursues a woke, left-wing, anti-Israel agenda where the public are considered thick and any criticism of the Establishment which basically funds just about every large media organisation with huge amounts of public sector advertising is not allowed.
Other similarities with the UK are there too. Overwhelming public concern about mass immigration into the country is dismissed as the work of the ” Far-Right “.
Anyway, expect the referendums to happen again and the public to be threatened into changing their minds as they did over the original referendum on the Lisbon Treaty which they rejected only for it to be overturned within a year after threats form a corrupt French midget Napoloen Sarkozy.
Paddy gets the government he votes for.
Whilst voting against this change to the constitution, which the arsehole politicians put down to “On this occasion, the majority clearly were not persuaded as to the merits of the two proposals put forward”, my countrymen have already surrendered to the same immigration stupidity as the rest of the West.
Like the compliant Swedes, any accusation of “I Hear You’re A Racist Now, Father!” will make an Irishman shrink back into his hole quicker than a claim for asylum from a black Ukrainian.
Leo Varadkar’s political fault was trying to rush the referendum through to meet a headline date.
Had he the patience to change a minor law here, and a definition there, he could have achieved his elitist view of the world in small unremarkable stages. It’s a strategy that’s worked elsewhere.
And look what we’ve got in Scotland ffs
“Given this overwhelming rejection, I wonder how that twat Varadkar is prime minister.”
Horse-trading and chicanery, is the short answer. His mob won 21% of the vote last time out, going from first place to third. But, since nobody actually won outright, he was able to cobble together a coalition with Martin’s mob (22%) and the Greenists (7%), with him taking turns as PM like an absurdist game of musical chairs.
Who voted for this ramshackle stitch-up? 50% of the electorate? No, nobody did. Democracy™!
