Oh, Do Fuck Off!

I’ll drink whatever I damned well choose.

The UK heatwave is well and truly here, with today set to be the hottest day of the year so far.

Temperatures across parts of the country will hit 32°C today, before similar highs tomorrow and then 33°C on Saturday.

So, a warm summer’s day. Nothing unusual. Okay, unusual for the UK as we usually get warmer rain. But in this case, a pleasant summer’s day. Very nice. Make the most of it.

To cope with the heat, you might be tempted to reach for a delicious cold drink.

But if you want to avoid dehydration, make sure it’s not orange juice.

That’s according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), who have urged Brits to avoid fruit juices and smoothies during the heatwave.

‘Fruit juice, smoothies and soft drinks can be high in sugar which dehydrates the body,’ the UKHSA explained.

‘Limit the amount of fruit juice or smoothies that you drink, and swap sugary soft drinks for diet, sugar-free or no added sugar varieties.’

Instead, it’s best to stick to water, diluted squash, or lower fat milks, the experts advise.

Oh, do fuck off! When you get there fuck off some more and keep fucking off until we can no longer see you or hear your hectoring. If I want to drink orange juice – and I am partial – I’ll bloody well do so. Now, did I tell you to fuck off? If so why are you still here?

Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluids than it takes in.

Worryingly, if left untreated, dehydration can lead to more serious issues including heatstroke, kidney failure, and even brain damage.

Yes, because an orange juice on a warm day is going to lead to brain damage. This kind of hysterical over reaction is precise why no one takes any notice of these so-called experts or ‘scientists.’ FFS!

Sugary juices, smoothies and soft drinks aren’t the only drinks that the experts advise against.

Despite the temptation of a sunny beer garden, it’s also wise to avoid alcohol.

‘Alcohol has a dehydrating effect on the body, so it is a good idea to choose alcohol-free options, or alternate alcoholic drinks with a glass of water,’ they added.

The advice comes as the UKHSA activated yellow heat-health alerts for most of England, which will run until Sunday evening.

Just… Fuck off! 30 degrees is pleasant. It is not excessively hot. In France, it was around that for most of the summer from March to October where we lived. Funnily enough we managed not to suffer from dehydration. We managed not to suffer from it during that gorgeous summer of ’76, when no one panicked about the temperature. It was just a glorious summer as this one is looking to be.

I am sick to death of experts. They can… Well, you get the drift.

  1. I’m prepared, obviously I have access to wonderful Northumbrian tap water, but I also bought many 4-packs of 2.8-3.4% low alcohol beer. I’ve got stronger beer too, Spaten from Munich, for the evenings, and I’ll be having a braai every day, chicken marinated in various ways, Greek, Shawarma, Cajun, etc. As a side, baby potatoes and Greek salad.

    • Potjie tomorrow night, just right for our harsh tropical Queensland winters (18-22C), haven’t decided on meat yet.

      • We’ve decided on the king of potjie meats, oxtail.

We were living in the UK during the beef-on-the-bone ban and were missing our oxtail potjies. MrsBud went into a butcher in Beverley and said “I’m not going to to beat around the bush, I’m after something that you find at the back of a cow and it wags.” The butcher went in the back and returned with a full oxtail in a carrier bag which he charged her a couple of quid for.

  2. I wondered when the Demon Drink would rear it’s head…let’s make it about OJ then get to real reason.

  3. Where I am it was over 32c within 30 minutes after sunrise;)

I’m getting ready to start work and it’s 46 out. And mofos will be sneaking beers on breaks while we work.

  4. The advice to choose low fat milks always annoys me. Full fat milk doesn’t have much fat in the first place. People have been encouraged into a mindset that makes them think they are helping their diet by choosing tasteless low fat milk and they then fill their trolleys with biscuits and chocolate.

    • I like skim milk in tea precisely because it doesn’t detract from the flavour of the tea, but I have full fat milk in coffee.

  5. Just ignore all self appointed experts, that’s what everyone else does. I can’t think that, other than a handful of neurotics, anyone takes any notice of them.

I actually use semi skimmed milk because I prefer it, nothing to do with the fat content.

  6. Having booked the day off a while ago, because we’re going somewhere, I plan to be sat in a beer garden by 3pm. I may even have a fruit juice with my pint of lager (Unlikely)

  7. Er, don’t want to give them any more ideas, but they forgot to recommend us not to smoke.
