More on Curfews

The Devil’s Kitchen has belatedly commented on the curfew story. Naturally, he is as horrified as the rest of us who have discussed this egregious attack on civil liberties (not to mention the disgracefully lazy policing involved). However, DK brings to our attention the sheep-like mentality of the British people and their desire to be corralled in this manner.

A nationwide youth curfew to help combat knife crime was backed by the public and senior politicians last night.

In the strongest sign yet of the growing fear of violence on Britain’s streets, a Sunday Times poll reveals today that nine out of 10 parents would back legal restrictions on their children going out after dark.

I’m sorry? But WTF?!? If these people are concerned about their sprogs, surely they should be taking personal responsibility for their behaviour. If they think that they shouldn’t be out at night, then it is up to them to make sure they are in by a preset time each evening. It is not up to the state to treat the whole country as if it is a prison. Although, any excuse will do, it seems.

A report from a House of Commons committee will say this week that a national curfew on young teenagers could curb anti-social and violent behaviour. Keith Vaz, the Labour chairman of the home affairs select committee, said: “I have sympathy with the view that children should not be out after 9pm.”

I’m sure he does. Like the rest of the Labour party, he is an un-reconstituted fascist. Curfews are what happen in fascist countries. They do not happen in modern liberal democracies. Or if they do, then something has gone seriously wrong somewhere. You do not solve a crime problem by locking everyone up and treating them all as prisoners in their own homes. You do not destroy one of the most basic of civil liberties. But, it seems, the British public have forgotten why generations of their forebears shed their blood. Hard won liberties are being tossed to the four winds with the willing collaboration of those to whom they belong.

Our poll shows that 73% of parents would welcome an 8pm curfew for young children while a further 17% would back one at 9pm. Similarly, 53% would welcome a nationwide 9pm curfew for 10 to 16-year-olds, with a further 35% of parents saying a 10pm ban would be acceptable.

If these figures are true (and you have to be aware of the questions before assuming that the answers give an accurate finding) then 73% of parents are so stupid, they shouldn’t have spread their genes in the first place.

  1. And you know what? You can just imagine who that lazy copper will pick on more. Not the gang of pissed-up ‘youths’ spoiling for a fight with their weapons but the 15-year-old who’s been sent out by their parents to the shops for a few chocolates to enjoy during a peaceful night in.

  2. I made a similar point at my blog – looking at pictures of Redruth you would never imagine it to be a den of iniquity, where hooded terror stalks the streets at night. Looking at a more local clime in the form of Beeston in South Leeds where the majority of our youth group live and you see a place that may actually benefit from an enforced curfew, and not just for the kids.

Dont get me wrong I’m not for one minute suggesting that we impose police curfews on our streets, but are they likely to lock down Sarf London? or Beeston? or the Gorbals? Thought not.

I’m very suspicious of them, I’d like to see how they were actually worded.

  4. Me too. That’s why I’m hedging my bets. If the great British public proved to be outraged and all the teenagers went out on the streets to demonstrate (with their parents’ approval) at 9pm in Redruth, I’d be delighted and my faith in humanity restored.

How long do you think I’ll have to wait?

  5. A very long time…

I see Gordon Brown’s hit on a winning formula – indule the parents with talk of a curfew, then turn around and blame the parents:

“More than 110,000 “problem families” with disruptive youngsters will be targeted as part of a crackdown on knife crime, Gordon Brown has said.

They will get parenting supervision, with the worst 20,000 families facing eviction if they do not respond.

Now, does that mean that he knows all the worst 20,000 families are in council-owned or privately-let accommodation and therefore vulnerable to being evicted? Because it won’t apply if they own their homes.

Or is he talking out of his a**e and hasn’t a clue how to achieve that figure?

  6. I’m not sure how they would force private landlords to evict, either. I’m about to let the Longrider abode as a consequence of the monocular cretin’s economic policies and I wouldn’t evict my tenant because he or one of his minions told me to. I don’t take orders from them.

  7. This is about the limitation of freedom for everyone. This is about creating a climate of fear to ‘justify’ ID cards. This is about the DNA database, the breaking of personal information. We have a Brownian parasite class, whose sole objective is to impose their fascist, intrusive collectavism on the rest of us. Well they can read my lips..’Over my dead body.’
