No, We Don’t

Need more laws.

Legislation should be brought in to deal with the problem of cyber-bullying, according to the children’s commissioner for Wales.

Keith Towler said there was little regulation and control of bullying on social networking sites.

There is a certain mindset – the hard of thinking – that sees the state and more laws and bans as the answer to every problem (even when there isn’t a problem, such as what people eat and drink). Bullying has always been with us and always will, no matter what laws are introduced. The bully will always find a way to torment his victim. At least with cyber bullying, there are built in means of blocking them. Or, of course, turn off the computer. Yes, I realise this sounds trite for someone who is suffering the torment, but the state is not the answer. Indeed, for every “problem”, the state is not the answer, more likely than not, the state will simply make matters worse.

The Welsh government said it was better to develop respectful relationships than criminalise bullying.

Well, yes, indeed.

What a jolly good idea. Can we start by prosecuting ASH and its offshoots? Alcohol Concern is a prime contender, too. In fact, why not go the whole hog and prosecute ‘Public Health’ for cyber-bullying smokers, drinkers and the overweight?
