Twitter Twats

This is why I eschew Twitter.

The tweet, sent from the account of Justine Sacco, read: “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!”

Okay, given modern sensibilities and micron thin skins of the twitterati, the inevitable backlash to such a stupid comment was inevitable.

In response to the furour, IAC has removed Ms Sacco’s details from its corporate website, but not commented on her employment status. Many Twitter users have called on the company to fire Ms Sacco following the comments.

Right on cue…

Okay, so the woman is a fool. You would have thought she would have learned from the experiences of others who have fallen foul of the hard-of-thinking twitter mob, but, no, she goes and makes an arse of herself. And, let’s be clear, here, that is all she has done. If people are offended by her comments, it is because they have made a positive decision to be offended. The rational response would be to ignore it as a moment of foolishness. Outrageous it ain’t. But, still, outrage is what we get.

“This is an outrageous, offensive comment that does not reflect the views and values of IAC,” the firm said in a statement on Friday.

Oh, fuck off and get over yourself you pompous, self-righteous twat. It is not outrageous at all. Stupid and ill-conceived maybe, but that is all. Of course, if this organisation decides that her behaviour warrants dismissal, well, that is up to them, but spare us the gnashing of teeth and over use of the word “offensive” because, frankly, it isn’t. it really isn’t worth a nanosecond’s consideration. There are more important things in life than a tweet – and, frankly, a foolish tweet really should not result in the morally self-righteous demanding that someone be dismissed because of it. These people have no sense of proportion.

Twitter – the modern-day mob, with the intellectual capacity of a microbe, skin the thickness of tissue paper and attention span of a goldfish.

  1. Perhaps you should explain to the outside free world which part of what she said was foolish and why – and even which was untrue.
