Katie Hopkins and Racism

Katie Hopkins is so wonderfully awful, I almost find myself liking her. She is the archetype of the tactless person – the one who says what everyone else is thinking but dare not utter. The Indy has decided that she is racist because she has had a go at gypsies and travellers.

In an entirely characteristic series of offensive tweets, Katie Hopkins has declared to her followers that she is “not a racist”.

The only problem is she did so after being so racist even Nigel Farage would have denied all knowledge of her, had she in fact have been a Ukip councillor and not just a former Apprentice contestant who occasionally gets wheeled out on debate shows to shout down benefits claimants.

Notice how they have to get a dig in at Ukip even though this is nothing to do with Ukip? They just can’t help themselves, can they? Maybe some of the mud will stick. More likely, those who find themselves nodding in agreement with Hopkins will be even more likely to cast a vote for the purple rosette. After all, we are all racists, so why not behave accordingly? Nothing to lose…

Anyway, what did Hopkins have to say?

Today’s targeted cultural groups were “travellers” and “gypsies”, whom Hopkins declared were “ferrel humans[sic]” (yes, she spelt feral wrong) that “we have no duty to”.

Oh, my, so she spelled a word wrong. This is a newspaper, mind. A newspaper that regularly mangles its prose and prints utter garbage. Far be it for me to make observations about motes and beams…

But the point she is making? Apart from the fact that travellers and gypsies are not and never have been another race, what about that? Well, er, I suspect that there are plenty who will agree with her statement. Especially those who have had an encampment appear alongside their homes, noticed the crime rate increase along with the detritus that is left behind – assuming that the buggers do, actually, you know, travel – and wondered why they have to put up with it. She’s right, we have no duty to these people. They choose their lifestyle and I have no problem with that. I do not expect to be forced into making adjustments to mine to accommodate them – or having my wallet lightened to pay for it. So, er, I agree with Hopkins.

She went on to lambast schools for introducing cultural assemblies to educate children about the traveller lifestyle and threw in a few sourceless figures about taxpayers’ money and how much of it we’re probably not hemorrhaging over their existence.

Well, er, yes, I find myself agreeing with her again. As for the Indy’s assertion that we are not paying – who, precisely, is paying for traveller camps, then? Travellers?

And then she tossed in some equally crass comments over the sentencing of Islamic cleric Abu Hamza – the notorious London ‘hate preacher’ who was found guilty of a number of terrorism charges in the US on Monday (19 May):

Um…

Brit justice – provide Hamza with house, home and lifestyle. American justice – slam him in a cell, hope he rots before dinner. Splendid.

This is crass? I thought it pretty fair comment, frankly. Maybe this is crass, then:

Dear Mrs Hamza – take your terrorist kids, your thieving sons and your revolting daughters and GET OUT. You are not welcome in our country.

Oh, I dunno. Hamza took refuge in this country and then waged a terror campaign against his hosts. I’d say that Hopkins is being entirely fair here. So maybe this is crass:

I will defend the rights of tax payers, hard workers and those trying to contribute to this Great Nation. That is not racist. That is right

No, not really… Perfectly reasonable.

It’s the Indy that is out of touch – but then, we knew this already. And I guess I must be a racist…

  1. Isn’t being racist a crime now?

Isn’t outing someone as a criminal an offence unless they have been charged. Isn’t that why they always add allegedly, except for racism funny enough.

So perhaps she can sue them and make some more cash.

That I would love to see.

  2. It is interesting how these labels are used to create a group that can be hounded currently . As in the past with kulaks , jews ,commisars.
All having no need to prove anything but the label.
Still it helped eviscerate England as nobody dare protest.
