You Can’t Win…

Not with the PC brigade and victim-hood poker. Not if you is whitey.

So, suspecting (correctly as it turned out) that he was being discriminated against because he has a white sounding name, Hudson submitted his work under a Chinese pseudonym – and, voilà, he got published.

So, he demonstrated that the publishers were engaging in racial profiling, which is evil, of course. And black people have done precisely this when submitting CVs  with  a white sounding pseudonym to demonstrate that employers are nasty racists. They were congratulated for their efforts, as of course, Hudson was.

Oh…

A white author is under fire after using an Asian pen name in order to avoid rejection letters.

Er… So, when  black people do it, it’s all fine and dandy.  If a white man does it, it’s racist.

Franny Choi, a Frederick Bock Prize winner, told The Independent that the author’s deception is cultural appropriation at it’s purest, as Asian-Americans are forced to change their names to survive racism.

“When I was in the second grade, I stopped going by my Korean name, Jeong Min, because at seven years old, I already felt the shame of being foreign and the exhaustion of hearing my name butchered over and over again. As a kid, I tried to imagine myself as an author but worried about how to hide my obviously Korean surname,” she said.

“For Asian-Americans, changing our names is a strategy to survive a racist and nativist America. Michael Derrick Hudson’s pseudonym is cultural appropriation at its purest — it’s stealing from the struggle of people of color for a white man’s personal gain.”

And when Asian people do it, it isn’t for personal gain, eh? Quite apart from being a contender for Pseud’s corner (and bollocks with gold plating), that whiny little rant sums up the racist and sexist PC brigade and their victim-hood poker rather nicely. It doesn’t matter who you are, a struggling writer faces difficulty getting work published until they are known. Hudson has done us all a favour – he has exposed the racism that is alive and well when it comes to “affirmative action” which is what this appears to be. If his work is good enough to be published, then that is all that is needed. The colour of his skin and whether he has dangly bits in his pants should be neither here nor there. But, clearly, they are. And racism, when the target is white, middle-aged and male is all okay now.

It is still racism. It is still wrong. The  colour of the victim’s skin doesn’t change that.

Oh, and the PC brigade are a bunch of steaming hypocrites.

  1. Oh for fu-… seriously?

Pseudonyms aren’t exactly uncommon in the writing field. Clearly, neither are pseuds. Or narcissistic idiots with chips the size of Catford on their shoulder.

  2. I think that rather than being purely hypocrites these people are just too stupid to be aware of their own stupidity. I have a feeling that there is a specific word for this but if there is I can’t remember it.
