Godwin Anyone?

Heseltine always was a bit of a twat.

Germany will “win the peace” in Europe as a result of Brexit, with the UK’s influence diminished, the former deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine has said.

Where’s he been this past half century? They won the peace decades ago. To drag the spectre of the Nazis out – which is what he is doing here – in order to argue against Brexit is pretty low and somewhat Godwinesque. Or is it Basil Fawlty he is trying to emulate?

The Tory peer said it was “quite unacceptable” that Germany would be in a dominant position in Europe having lost the second world war.

To whom? Who gets to decide what is “acceptable”?

Lord Heseltine, who was sacked from a string of advisory roles within government after rebelling over the article 50 legislation in the Lords, insisted he would continue working to avert the “disaster” of Brexit.

I see. So he wishes to subvert a democratic mandate? Much like those old Nazis, then? See, two can play the Godwin game, eh?

“And if I can put it to you, for someone like myself, it was in 1933, the year of my birth, that Hitler was democratically elected in Germany. He unleashed the most horrendous war. This country played a unique role in securing his defeat.

“So Germany lost the war. We’ve just handed them the opportunity to win the peace. I find that quite unacceptable.”

Because leaving the EU is exactly like the 1933 elections in Germany and the fall of the Weimar Republic. The rest of us, however, have decided that the war was over seventy years ago. Michael Heseltine is an embarrassment to himself if no one else.

  1. The Tory peer said it was “quite unacceptable” that Germany would be in a dominant position in Europe having lost the second world war.

Yes, of course you are right, Mr Heseltine. As of now, GB will no longer be the industrial powerhouse of Europe, with a treasury overflowing with trade surpluses as we stupidly hand over that baton to Germany. After all, UK has been THE commanding voice in Brussels until now, eh?

Moron. Where has he been for the past fifty years? Unacceptable that Germany would be in a dominant position? Would be? Is Heseltine deaf, dumb and fucking blind? Has he not noticed that the EU is, and always has been run by Germany? Has he not come across the term ‘The Fourth Reich’ in reference to the EU? Has it escaped his attention that UK was never more than a minor irritant to the EU, tolerated only because of the obscene amounts of taxpayers cash it pumped into the corrupt maw of that profligate institution?

    Fuckwit.

  2. “…insisted he would continue working to avert the “disaster” of Brexit.”

Ha ha, good luck with that mike. How exactly do you propose to stop it happening? Maybe you can summon up the ghost of Ted Heath.

If we were all too ignorant and stupid to vote the correct way, why is it that since they lost so many remainers have shown themselves to be such imbeciles?

  3. Obviously Heseltine doesn’t buy the EU lie that it is the only reason that France and Germany haven’t taken another pop at each other since 1945. Or does he ‘think’ that, outside the EU, the UK won’t be able to resist the urge to reoccupy Calais?

  4. Could this be the same Michael Heseltine who skived out of National Service by standing for Parliament? Those of us who served earlier in Germany might have different memories. But this is the 21st Century and a very different world. The EU for all its pride is bust. The Euro is bust. There is radical change occurring and new major problems. The old ideas etc. of Heseltine and his fellow followers of European fashion will simply land the lot of us in poverty and constant crisis.

  5. “Godwin Anyone?”

That’s just what Hitler would have said!

But I suspect that we now need a Second Order Godwin’s Law which states that “As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of somebody invoking Godwin’s Law before any other participants explicitly mention the Nazis approaches 1”.

  6. In practical realpolitik terms, it makes little difference that Germany lost WWII. Given her size, her position in Europe and the fact that the Germans are a hard working industrious people, I fail to see how it could be any other way. She is undoubtedly the driving force behind the EU for reasons of historical import, how could it be otherwise. Heseltine, clearly does not understand geopolitics. If he did, he would realise why given the choice – Britain would always choose the open sea.

  7. “Heseltine always was a bit of a twat”

Sorry LR; much as I do not wish to disagree with you, Heseltine always was a lot of a twat
