Pretty Desperate Stuff

We were manipulated, apparently…

Foreign governments such as Russia and China may have been involved in the collapse of a voter registration website in the run-up to the EU referendum, a committee of MPs has claimed.

A report by the Commons public administration and constitutional affairs committee (PACAC) said MPs were deeply concerned about the allegations of foreign interference in last year’s Brexit vote.

The committee does not identify who may have been responsible, but has noted that both Russia and China use an approach to cyber-attacks based on an understanding of mass psychology and of how to exploit individuals.

These people really are scraping the barrel. The Russians and Chinese did not manipulate me. I made my decision back in 1975 that should there be another referendum, I would vote to leave. Absolutely nothing happened in the intervening decades to change my mind. Indeed, seeing the EU up close and personal merely strengthened my resolve. If any foreign power influenced me, it was based in Brussels.

  1. Just skimmed through the report, but it says that even if this hacking took place it did not materially affect the result, but the main criticism of the report seems to be against Cameron and the failure of the government and civil service to plan ahead for a vote to leave and also to use the civil service in a partisan fashion. Pretty damning stuff. The alleged hacking is a sideshow. (I decided to leave in 1992)

  2. Do you remember when you had to be absent or lame to get a postal vote? Do you remeber when the voting register was available at any main post office or library?
Now there are very few places that one can see the register, fewer still to see the ‘real’ register and even then under supervision, (privacy and all that). So the people who would know that number 13A is a single bedroom flat and 30 people don’t live there aren’t allowed to check while all those masses of new postal votes can be completed by one person.
Damn those Russians and Chinese, however did they do that?

  3. Like JimS, I agree voting has become a joke thanks to postal votes.

I once had a Labour ‘activist’ at my door asking if I would vote for her party. I told her no because of the way the Labour party (this was in the build-up to the 2010 election) had allowed such a ridiculous and disastrous increase in postal voting and encouraged the corruption so blatantly being used by our new friends who couldn’t be arsed to learn English.

She just sighed, nodded, and said she agreed and went off to see if anyone else on my road would vote for the Brown (the man, not the colour)

  4. Concur. To suggest for a moment that the British People were manipulated by the Russians and Chinese is fatuous. Either way you look at it, it didn’t work on 52% or 48%

Rajeev Syal really is scraping the bottom of the barrel. They’ll say anything to either traduce and insult those who voted leave or suggest some outside agency had a hand in it.

Had it gone the other way of course, we wouldn’t have heard any of this arrant drivel.

  5. It seems that some parties have an inability to recognise their own mistakes and foist the blame on others. Yet these are people who would presume to rule?

    • In 1973 I was living in Denmark and I could not believe that the Danes said Yes to the EU.Back in the UK by 1975, I voted No to the Eu. I found it hard to believe back then that so many wanted to stay. I still find it hard to believe that so many want to stay. I guess you cant fix stupid!

  6. “collapse of a voter registration website”. That’ll be a government designed/built website. Nuff said.

  7. I simply voted the same way i did back in, ’75 was it?
    Bloody NO anyway.
No Soviet Commies got to me, no Chinese whispered in me shell like, i never trusted the grinning traitor who signed us up back in the 70’s, nothing that’s happened in the intervening years has made me change my mind, and the boy cameron proved his testicles still haven’t dropped because like a little child who couldn’t get his own way he flounced off in a huff presumably chanting ‘i shan’t play’ when we metaphorically told him and his cabal to get stuffed.

Someone tell the commons committee that there’s millions of us out there who, after all our money that they’ve pissed up the wall devising the ultimate propaganda machine in the bbc, aided and abetted by chanel no4 and the bloody grauniad, that there’s millions of us that didn’t believe a word they said in 1975 and 40 years later we haven’t changed our minds.
