In Which I Find Myself Backing Sugar

Lord Sugar.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell has called on businessman and Apprentice host Alan Sugar to “delete and disown” a tweet that depicts Jeremy Corbyn sitting next to Adolf Hitler.

Okay, Sugar is a weapons grade twat most of the time, but as he said, this is a joke – a joke that like many such jokes makes an underlying point. And it seems they don’t like it up ’em.

McDonnell appealed to Sugar to take the image down, saying that now is “the time to learn from each other and unite people”.

He said on Twitter: “People have contacted me about Alan Sugar’s tweet. I just make this appeal to him. Please delete and disown it. We all desperately need to bring people together now. We can hold strong views about each other’s politics but now is the time to learn from each other and unite people.”

Including the vile anti-Semites in your own movement?

Labour MP John Mann, a critic of Corbyn’s, backed McDonnell, writing on Twitter: “The use of Hitler/ Nazi comparators is demeaning, unwarranted and dangerous. You damage the fight against antisemitism with this @Lord_Sugar. Withdraw this and apologise please.”

No, it’s not dangerous. It’s humour. Dark humour, granted, but it’s making a valid point about antisemitism in the Labour movement and the willingness of the leadership to turn a blind eye as they have done these past few years. Sugar should stick to his guns on this one.

Sugar later responded: “It’s a joke, but the angry brigade like to moan.”

Don’t they just?

  1. One has to take Sugar with a pinch of salt. It was clearly a ‘joke’, on a par, for taste, with Pugitler. Unlike those vile genuinely anti-Semitic tweets of Leave.uk…that nobody on the ‘libertarian’ side of the blogosphere seems to have picked up on.

On the subject of sugar & Brexshite, I see Project Fear-the Toblerone Agenda-is alive and well https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/mar/30/brexit-means-eggs-sit-ferrero-warns-of-stale-easter-chocolate

    • Which ‘anti Semitic Tweets’..?

If you mean the one pointing out that Labour has calculated there’s more votes from Muslims in being anti Semitic, than that is simply recognising what everyone knows!

  2. It’s no big secret that Corbyn is an anti-Semite like all leftys. Pointing this out is somehow ‘offensive’?

Nah… I thought Sugar’s car gag was very funny. And bang on the money.

  3. …a tweet that depicts Jeremy Corbyn sitting next to Adolf Hitler…

Sugar later responded: “It’s a joke, but the angry brigade like to moan.”

Hmm, could it be that Sugar is drawing attention to fact that Hitler, Nazis & Fascists were socialists not right wing?

    • Quite apart from it being obvious satire. Sugar wasn’t actually saying that he was at the Nuremberg rallies. Libel would have failed had it gone to court as fair comment would have applied.

      • I’ve sent an email to John Mann urging him to sue Alan Sugar on the basis that it would reveal Jeremy Corbyn to be seen, to any reasonable person, as an anti-Semite.

  4. Even if Sugar wasn’t joking, he’s entitled to post whatever he likes. Who are these gentile arseholes to lecture a jew on how he should feel about Corbyn’s pathetic lack of action ?
