Never Apologise

What is it with people today?

A brewery chain has been forced to apologise after one of its pubs banned vegans during a Boxing day hunt.

The Dorset pub in Lewes, East Sussex, posted a sign in its window which also said hunt saboteurs were not welcome.

‘Due to the hunt today, we regret to inform you that we will not be welcoming saboteurs or vegans into the premises,’ the poster read.

It was signed: ‘Kind regards, the Management.’

And the problem with this is? After all, I’ve been banned in the past for turning up on a motorcycle. I’ve just avoided the places that did it and advised as many people as possible so that they could do likewise. The market being the best means of dealing with such decisions. The pub should be free to turn away whomsoever it wishes and the clientele should be free to express displeasure at that decision by staying away in their droves. End of problem.

The licensees’ stance led to a backlash on social media, and the pub was accused of being ‘discriminatory’.

Indeed it is and they should be free to be as discriminatory as they choose. It may cause them financial hardship, but that’s their choice.

Harvey’s, the brewery which owns The Dorset, said it was ‘appalled’.

Yawn. How long before someone says that it’s inappropriate?

One employee had been suspended over the ‘inappropriate’ sign, a spokesman said.

Well, bugger me…

Thing is here there does seem to be another complication. I am presuming that this is a tenancy and the brewery carries the overall responsibility. In which case, what they say goes ultimately. That said, they are using the term “employee”, which is slightly puzzling. Usually, the landlord is a tenant and the bar staff are employed by the landlord. Unless this is a different arrangement. But, then, this being the MSM, who knows?

On Twitter, Gilly Smith said: ‘Isolating and discriminating against their own customers? Really clever marketing ploy. Should be ashamed of themselves and boycotted.

Well, yeah, that’s how it works. It’s a self-resolving matter. Nothing to get worked up about.

  1. The inclusion of vegans in the ban seems a bit odd. If the pub is supporting the hunt then banning hunt saboteurs makes some kind of sense but I don’t see the logic of banning vegans. I suppose it could be said that market forces were behind the apology too, the brewery could lose the custom of vegans vegetarians and anyone who cares a lot about inclusiveness.

    • Given the militancy and intolerance of Many vegans then it’s an inevitable corollary – I am hoping more outlets take this welcome step. There seems to be a Strong correlation between veganism and left wing ideology so it must be rooted out along with all the other sources of socialism

      • Only amongst the champagne socialists dude. All the working class socialists that I know love their meat and would take up arms before being forced to give it up. I’m definitely in that bracket and although just anecdote…the only vegans I know apart from my brother are conservative voters…veganism seems to have more of a relationship with relatively wealthy people rather than down and dirty left wingers…

        • It sounds like you are genuinely old Labour rather than Corbinite so you may well be correct! I would be very surprised however if you and your friends are not considered ‘Gammons’ and excommunicated from Labour! Certainly there is no place for White Racist Criminal Gammons in the current opposition

  2. There was a time when a pub landlord could ban anyone without giving a reason. I believe this is technically still the case but it became complicated with the introduction of the race relations act and now I should think impossible for the landlord with all the minorities claiming discrimination.

      • Having worked as a doorman I have to say that these people contribute to their own problems. If you don’t want a certain type of person in your pub you don’t blatantly advertise the fact. You just have someone on the door politely turning people away after a few discreet questions. It really isn’t rocket science.

      • A restaurant in Yungaburra (Queensland) banned children, because too many were not properly controlled and ruined the experience of the customers, who wanted an evening’s fine dining, not a playschool.
The SJW were outraged and tried to organise a boycott resulting in mucho publicity.
The restaurant was subsequently booked out for months ahead from all those new customers discovering it and its refreshingly peaceful (brat-free) policy.
That was a few years ago, and I’ve not had a chance to go back. Anyone know what happened next? Did they continue with this policy, and thrive? Or fold?

  3. Spoilsports. I and many others would have turned up just to see the fun. My money would be on the ones in Pink, especially if the dogs were allowed in.
    Good reason for a lock-in.

  4. Meat is lovely so is Harveys beer. Harveys own the pub. Vegans are mentally ill. Enough said eh !!!
