We are about to enter a maunder minimum.
Cold snaps so severe they could threaten food shortages and plummeting temperatures are a very real possibility over the next 30 years, an expert claims.
With the Sun entering a natural “hibernation period” or solar minimum in which it projects less heat at the Earth there could be frostier weather and heavy snow storms.
Scientist Valentina Zharkova, of Northumbria University, said average temperatures could drop by 1C in 2020 and last up to a year – while resulting in wet and cold summers.
Of course, the warmist alarmists who want us all to declare a climate emergency seem to think that we are the only effect on the climate – that the fraction of a fraction of a percent increase in CO2 caused by human activity is going to have a devastating effect. Yet, yet… We get our climate from the sun and it is the sun’s activity that has the greatest effect.
A Grand Solar Minimum only comes around every 400 years and Professor Zharkova warns icy spells and wetter summers could be a mainstay until 2053.
She claims the dramatic cold snap in Canada, which saw temperatures plummet to -50C, are thanks to the minimum.
“The Sun is approaching a hibernation period,” Professor Zharkova, who has published multiple scientific papers on solar minimums, said.
Some folk are going to have egg on their faces. But, never mind, I guess they can blame it on us and use it as an excuse to impose Marxism on us anyway.
However, other experts have downplayed the likely impact of such minimums while arguing global warming will increase temperatures and counter any effects.
Solar scientist Mathew Owens said human activity, including O2 in the atmosphere, will “vastly offset” any reduction in the Sun’s energy output.
“Thus there will probably be no detectable effect on global climate,” he added.
We will see, eh? If he is right, all that global warming will have been a benefit.
“Professor Valentina Zharkova” sounds reassuringly Russian. Proper scientists. “Mathew Owens” on the other hand……
Zharkova, along other physicists, has been talking about this cooling trend for quite a while now. I’ve watched a number of her presentations and they all make sense. The magnetic fields of the sun and Earth have a distinct relationship and influence on climate. It’s not all Total Solar Irradiance (TSI).
Thunberg by contrast is just an ignorant sockpuppet, an actress emoting wildly but saying nothing of any real worth. Makes me wonder why people even bother to listen to her. Although I have a feeling her ‘fans’ cheering and whooping in the UN to her performances are doing so because they think they can bleed the rest of us white because some autistic child is throwing Teddy out of the pram over an issue she has no clue about.
The thing is, nobody knows really. Predicting the weather more than a few days ahead is pretty much impossible, this is why the climate change alarmists have no case. They are claiming to know with total certainty what nobody can know. Judging by the way that the weather has cycled in the past, a cooler spell is just as likely as anything, in fact it has possibly started already looking at Canada and the North of the US. Time will tell I suppose.
What ever happened to the ozone layer? All you heard about was the large hole in it, how devastating it was going to be. Now it is never mentioned, did cutting down The gas in aerosols cure it? Or is it so bad no one wants to tell us about it?

The use of CFC’s was heavily curtailed and the ozone layer recovered.
Cause and effect or coincidence?
Since the measurement of the ozone layer is very recent, we have no way to know if decade-long fluctuations happen normally, and we simply saw one when we started measuring.
So it may have been a massive demonstration of worldwide action combatting pollution, or a massive & expensive demonstration of self harming.
Side effects:
Fridges now use flammable refrigerants, and burn down tower blocks.
Tower blocks are clad in flammable insulation, instead of the nice safe CFC foamant they used to use. So once lit, they burn more thoroughly.
The USAF buys Halon on the blackmarket for aircraft fire systems, because they aren’t allowed to trade in it legally. I understand China still makes the stuff.
On the main topic, this is much bigger than one Russian scientist’s opinion.
There is a huge body of work out there on solar activity and climate, and the omens are not good.
For decades, the correlation between sunspots and climate was noted, but had no plausible connection. That has now been found, so the correlation is looking real and causal. (Solar magnetic fields–>cosmic rays incident on Earth–>cloud formation, for those interested).
