Self Awareness Redux

Nesrine Malik in the Groan.

In the rightwing culture war that has subsumed our politics, a handful of key words depict “the enemy”, all of them increasingly interchangeable: political correctness, identity politics, #MeToo, cancel culture, and above all, wokeness. (You can tell when this category of terms is being used to this effect when they slot neatly in the headline “Now ****** really has gone too far!”) Collectively, the words have come to pose a threat to readers, ready to be outraged by an unwelcome change to our politics and society, hiding under the guise of equality and justice.

Truly, we have entered clown world.

It is not the “right wing” who are appalled by the nasty far-left woke politics of the twatterati. It is ordinary decent people and if Malik thinks these people are “right wing” then that is a reflection of just how far to the left she is.

It is not the “right wing” who are permanently outraged – or has this hack not noticed the reaction to perfectly normal and rational opinions voiced by J K Rowling recently? Or the vile threats made against her because she wrote a book that offended the far left? (A book they haven’t read). It is not the “right wing” that are actively inciting violence against her, nor is the right wing engaging in book burning.

Who, precisely, is it that lurks on Twitter waiting for a reasonable person to make a reasonable point only to leap up and down, foaming at the mouth and shouting “racist”” or “Transphobe!” Or some other made up phobia that only exists in the rarefied atmosphere of the metropolitan wokerati.

People do not despise BLM because they are racists or even because they are “right wing” (they might be, but they are equally likely to be centrists). It is because they do not like nasty, Marxist ideology being thrust in their faces at every twist and turn, it is because people like Ashley Banjo and Alesha Dixon parade their politics on what is supposed to be family entertainment show along with the double standards of organisations such as Ofcom. We are not stupid. We can see the obvious hypocrisy on display. They aren’t even bothering to hide it.

But, still, there’s the narrative and all that. Guardian Towers is so divorced from reasonable ordinary people that like the creatures burning, looting and murdering in the name of black lives somehow mattering, they cannot see what the real world is really like, let alone empathise with those of us who occupy it. Nor can they see that it is not the “right wing” that despise them, it is just about everyone outside their echo chamber.

They really are truly vile. They started this culture war. They are the ones engaging in violence and across the pond, it is their comrades in arms who are murdering black people. So, yes, they are the enemy. The enemy of reason, the enemy of humanity and paradoxically, the enemy of progress, for they are actively unravelling all the work put into race relations over the past half century or so.

I note that once again, no comments allowed. Not surprised given the river of unmitigated effluence in the article.

  1. On the detail of “moves to drop the lyrics of Rule Britannia not being true”
Is a lie, some woke woman, probably from SOAS, was interviewed sympathetically on The Today Programme saying

“The words ‘Britons…never shall be slaves’ carries the message that other people can be”

The words never carried that message to me but there you go.

  2. The thinking, if you can call it that, of these people is really similar to that of the worst kind of religious zealots. Such people have beliefs that are pretty much carved in stone despite being based on the flimsiest evidence. They absolutely loath anyone that doesn’t believe as they do and perceive them to be totally evil. Right wing or in league with Satan, it’s the same thing really.

  3. there is no point in getting wound up by this type of people. They have always existed in one form or another.
The really sad thing is that they think they are decent and act in a sympathetic manner but really they are bigots.
Tiny intellects trapped by even smaller minds and mindsets. I find that debating with them is a waste of time, much better to ridicule them until they scream with distress and frustration.
They won’t learn from being mocked biut at least you tried. They say you shouldn’t mock the afflicted. I don’t accept that in these bigots cases.

  4. Last week Telegraph ran an article about “Many young now anti-woke”

They were all labelled ‘Far Right Extremists’

I assume Telegraph now classes Charles Moore, and me, as ‘Far Right Extremists’

iirc Timmy, or commenter reporteded it

  5. “In the rightwing culture war that has subsumed our politics” Ah, so it was the political ‘right’ who picked these fights?

Not leftist extremists trying to upset everyone else’s apple carts in the name of their ‘progress’? Which is actually them trying to drag everyone else into their fantasy utopia. Which has been shown not to work far too many times, at too high a body count.

Self awareness is not their strong suit. Especially as they can only define themselves by what they oppose, which is everything but their pet theories.
