That’s the Crown Done For

After all, the queen must be played by the queen as only she has the relevant experience. I don’t know about the dead people – dig them up, perhaps?

Only gay actors should play gay characters in film and television, critically-acclaimed screenwriter Russell T Davies has insisted.

Davies said all the gay characters in his upcoming Channel 4 drama It’s A Sin are played by gay actors because it is the only way to ensure an authentic portrayal.

Russel T(wat) Davies is, well, a twat. Only royalty may portray royalty, only soldiers may portray soldiers, only real policemen may portray police officers and only murderers may play murderers – and, importantly here – only straight people may play straight roles because only that way can you guarantee an authentic portrayal. Who needs actors, after all?.

Yes, I know reductio ad absurdum, but this kind of idiocy deserves no less. These people are actors, make believe is what they do – they play people who are not themselves. Remind me not to watch anything that involves this moron ever again.

      • Always made me chuckle this, people have chosen to enter a profession that, let’s be honest, employment within for each gig is based fairly heavily on appearance.

I’m not getting the job because of how I look! Says actor.

Another says that trans characters should only play trans

Don’t think there are too many historical roles written for trans, plus they mostly, well, look unusual. Art really should imitate life. We’re damn diverse and weird enough as we are without surgical or hormonal embellishments.

Plus, I want to know when Elliot Page is going to pay back all her earnings from say Whipit and Juno, gender misappropriation clearly.

It may have done some superhero Marvel shit too, but not interested in that.

  1. There is a strange inconsistency when it comes to white historical characters being played by black actors. It isn’t something that I get upset about, it just seems a bit silly to me. If you biopic is going to be believable the characters have to have some resemblance to the person they are supposed to be.

Elsewhere, I’ll never be able to find it now, there was a picture of a black girl who really looked like Greta Thunberg, apart from being black of course, she had the same angry expression and everything. The caption was on the lines of “If Disney make a film about Greta Thunberg”.

    • The problem of course is that it jars. I’ve probably mentioned it before but the BBC did a series of the Shakespeare history plays. At Agincourt, the Duke of York was played by Paterson Joseph. It had the effect of jolting the suspension of disbelief because there were no black nobles in medieval England and certainly not at Agincourt, despite the BBC propagandists.

      • For this reason I won’t watch “Bridgerton” – I’ve yet to visit a stately home in the UK which displays portraits of 18th Century ancestors who were black.

Doesn’t Davies’s attitude imply that gay people are different from straight people when they’ve been telling us for years that they’re no different (shades of Shylock and all that)? I doubt that the press is awash with critics slamming gay actors’ portrayal of straight characters for lacking “authenticity”?

  2. Yep Russell T Davies definitely a twat of the first order. I hear Anne Bolynn has turned black now. Perhaps Henry VIII was as well !

  3. I suppose that means that all those hunky, allegedly, macho men roles will always be played by hunky, macho, men. No more Rock Hudson or other promiscuous gays portraying hetero men. Similarly for the sapphic sisterhood. Perhaps this will cause shedloads of actors to have to come out of the closet if they wish to continue in the land of make believe

  4. Trying to remember and then it came:
    Hitchhiker
and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauti.
He will not be doing Sci Fi again, then?

    • Quite. Time travelling time lords can only be played by actual time travelling time lords. If anyone wanted to make themselves look like a virtue signalling dick, he certainly succeeded.

  5. Since this is acting surely a decent actor regardless of his sexual proclivities could play the role. You don’t have to be gay. We are not in Julian and Sandy territory are we?
