Colour Me Surprised

Diversity ain’t all it’s cracked up to be.

The disabled and the over-50s are the most under-represented groups on television, while ethnic minorities and gay people are over-represented, research has found.

Hands up who didn’t see that one coming? Or perhaps who haven’t noticed it? Along with white men invariably being the villains of the piece and over representation of ethnic minorities in police procedurals, for example. And don’t get me started on those mixed race couples in adverts.

Those aged 50 and over, who account for 31 per cent of workers, made up only 25.4 per cent of ‘contributions’ – which are similar to individual programme credits.

This isn’t exactly a new phenomenon. The older generation are seen as past it and the world has to be saved by the under thirties who know everything. This has been noticeable for a while now and it’s intensely irritating. For example, notice how Dr Who has become ever more youthful (with the odd exception) since his first outing as a grandfather played by William Hartnell.

So, in essence, what we knew to be the case is now confirmed. Diversity is merely a scam. Always was.

  1. I hate shopping at Ikea (it’s a cross between a rugby scrum and a jumble sale!), but they have stock that can been looked at.
I don’t like wayfair because it’s only online.
BUT at least the actors in wayfair’s TV adverts are more aligned to the UK population.

  2. I am an author and my books are diverse because I live in a diverse environment.
However if I lived in a mono cultural environment they wouldn’t be.
I guess they would be equally good or bad.
After all miss Marple books are less diverse than Hercule Poirot but does anyone care?

  3. “Hands up who didn’t see that one coming?”

Well, I didn’t expect to see it admitted and reported.

  4. It really annoys me when you see something coming on telly that looks like it might actually be good, only to find the entire cast is made up of pretty 20 somethings rather than age appropriate actors

  5. I know this is OT, and while I have tremendous sympathy for Ukrainian kids with cancer,
What the hell are a bunch of NHS staff doing spending their time and using OUR resources, (when the NHS is supposedly overwhelmed) to bring 20+ kids (plus families) to take over the few available facilities here? Only days ago, we were bing told of cancer testing waiting lists being up to a year – it appears only for us Brits! as these kids won’t be kept hanging about
Or have we been fed another pack of lies about the disaster that is the NHS?

I see a US organisation was dealing with them – but had the sense not to take them to the US.

Not being facetious here, but I’m sure the russians would have taken them in (if asked)

  6. When they say “ethnic minorities” we know which one they mean.
    Especially since Burt Kwouk departed.
Compare the minorities in fictional medical dramas and the medical documentaries.
Other countries TV dramas, at least those shown on our tv, seem to employ a better mix, probably more true mix.

  7. Shh! The skewed diversity is one of the best kept secrets, and as a Pale Stale Male I am happy to get on with my life under the RADAR.

Like many other oldies I can get away with saying ‘Things Which Should Not Be Said’ and I don’t need to turn out in fashionable clothes – only functional ones. If ‘my group’ was more widely acknowledged other people would have expectations, leading to their disappointment.
