Bad, Very Bad

That’s me sussed, then.

Researchers at Studio Psi.Co. in Italy investigated the connection between comic style descriptors and ‘dark triad’ personality traits.

These are psychopathy, defined by lack of empathy and antisocial behaviour; narcissism, a self-centred personality style; and Machiavellianism, demonstrating manipulation and indifference towards morality.

Presumably all the serious stuff has been researched, then.

‘Psychopathy showed the strongest positive correlations with the mockery styles; satire, sarcasm, and cynicism.

‘Machiavellianism was the best predictor of irony and was not related to the other comic styles.

So, I’m a psychopath. Of course, this could just be the usual junk science and I merely have a dry sense of humour. Difficult to tell.

These aggressive, ‘laughing-at’ humour styles reinforce that psychopaths are low in empathy and are bullying in nature.

The psychotherapists wrote: ‘Psychopaths may use these kinds of humour to lower others’ statuses, not considering others’ feelings, as they are characterised by deficits in emotional function and antisocial behaviour.’

Or maybe someone is being so pompous, their ego needs deflating a little. Just a thought.

I’m calling bullshit on this one.

  1. I’m really a easy going and good natured character really but my sense of humour can be pretty dark sometimes. I often mock people but only if they really deserve it. I would consider assigning psychopathic tendencies to those who like to give it out but can’t take it. Being able to laugh at your own foibles demonstrates a confident and well adjusted personality I think.

  2. One of my favourite books is Accidental Ironman by Martyn Brunt. It is full of self effacing humour as he is a good, but ultimately mediocre triathlete with a tendency to be somewhat accident prone. A consistently funny book.

  3. “Of course, this could just be the usual junk science”

Really? Seems like a word salad from a drunk junkie to me.

  4. “Psychopathy showed the strongest positive correlations with the mockery styles; satire, sarcasm, and cynicism.”

    Missed out schadenfreude.

  5. People told me I was bad at poetry because of my dyslexia but, so far, I’ve made 3 jugs and a vase, so fuck ’em!

  6. Hah! Fat lot they know! I am a complete cycle path who uses satire and irony, and has a black belt and braces in sarcasm. Not to mention a terminal case of advanced cynicism.

As for ethics, isn’t that an English county north of the Thames? Another simple fact that will be lost on the authors of said ‘study’.

Now I’m off to my goosestep lessons. But wait a moment. That’s a study from Italy, early adopter of the fascist philosophy. Hmmm…

  7. I really don’t care. If I make some quip or remark in a jocular fashion I really don’t care what the object of my sarcasm or wit thinks. I have of course been told to go away in simple language but haven’t we all? Once again, I don’t care. Probably psychopathic.
