Eh?

Apparently, Labour won’t lose the election because they are too left-wing. It’s all to do with narrative, apparently.

Pointing across the despatch box in 2013 at his political rival, David Cameron derided Ed Miliband for wanting to live in a “Marxist universe” with his “gimmick” to freeze energy bills for Britain’s consumers, fed up with rip-off gas and electric bills. Nearly four years later, Downing Street’s new occupant, Theresa May, appears to be on the cusp of bringing Cameron’s vision of a communist revolution to fruition. Using a campaign rally she announced this morning, if elected in four weeks’ time, the Conservatives – or “Theresa May’s team” as she has rebranded the party – will cap energy prices.

And sometimes, I despair. Cameron was right and I don’t know what May is thinking here. It’s not the place of government to be imposing caps on prices.

Miliband’s policy was popular so it is no surprise it has been imitated by May. At the time, it had the support of 63 per cent of the public. It would be fair to say the policy did not contribute to his punishing electoral defeat almost two years later.

That’s because an awful lot of people really do believe in the magic money tree. And when they talk of 63%, what they actually mean is 63% of the small population they polled and who were prepared to talk to them; so not a representative example of the population as a whole and certainly not 63% of the population.

But a trouncing at the ballot box – as per predictions and forecasts from psephologists – will not be rooted in the left wing policies put forward by the party’s leadership.

Really? Seriously? I call bullshit.

When polled, many have extraordinary support among the general public, including free school meals for primary school children, forcing big businesses to publish their tax returns, a £10-an-hour minimum wage, increasing the top rate of tax for the highest earners in Britain, and introducing a pay ratio.

Well, yeah, free money from the magic money tree does have a certain appeal…

But if the party is defeated at the general election in 31 days’ time, blame will undoubtedly be pinned to the left.

Indeed. That’s probably because those of us not polled – the vast majority – are aware of the damage such polices will cause and, yes, the English in particular are a Conservative nation. The Marxism of the current Labour leadership horrifies us. And rightly so. Marx was a vile little man who was an inveterate sponger who peddled a nasty ideology founded on hatred, envy and spite. Yeah, people are going to vote for that in their droves. Unfortunately, many will. Fortunately, they will be outnumbered.

  1. How disappointed people will be when they realise the “energy cap” is higher than their current tariffs.

  2. What they have all missed is that energy costs are so much higher because the Government is subsidising wind power. Wind power onshore is 11 times more expensive than conventional methods of energy production. Offshore wind power is at least 22 times more expensive. Millitwat was the idiot responsible for introducing the Climate Change Act in 2008 for Christ’s sake, so it was a bit rich for him to come out with all this energy cap rubbish. If they stopped subsidising the power companies (who also get the money when the turbines are shut down due to high winds) they energy bills would plummet. They won’t of course, because they believe all the climate change rubbish.

  3. Will they be looking at reducing Taxes on energy then? When we will have a tax cap?

  4. Just think, if the government were to put a cap on the price of Aston Martins we could all have one. I’m sure that it would be a vote winner. As you said, what on earth is she thinking? Repealing the climate change act would do far more good.
