Class War

I didn’t even know there was a BBC Radio 6

BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Cerys Matthews has banned public school-educated artists from her show.

The astonishing disclosure about her refusal to play records by pop stars she considers ‘over-privileged’ has sparked calls for her to quit.

Mrs Matthews said: ‘You have to try to listen to everything and take into consideration where one person has had more of a leg-up than somebody else, and act on it.

‘You must take into account who’s had the leg-ups. Because if you’ve been through the public school system, you’ve had so many leg-ups.

Er, why are we paying for some jumped up class warrior to indulge in social engineering on our dime? Time to abolish the licence fee. Oh, and it is not up to Matthews to decide who needs a leg up based upon their background. John Peel gave bands a leg up because they were good musicians. That being the requirement.

Tory MP Philip Davies attacked the idea and called on Cerys Matthews to resign from the BBC.

Nah. Just defund the whole rotten edifice and let it survive on people choosing to pay for its output. Matthews and her ilk will find it a little more difficult to engage in political games if the buying public shun the service and, thence, they don’t get paid.

Cerys is the former singer of Britpop band Catatonia.

  1. I’ve never been keen on the music of James Blunt, or Catatonia. But Mr. Blunt has seriously gone up in my estimation after reading that. I hope that Chris Bryant got to see it.

    • James Blunt is a former tank driver and was in the former Yugoslavia during the civil war there. For that alone he deserves a huge amount of respect. I wonder how much real help this plastic pop star has ever given anyone, anywhere…ever…

  2. No different to past. Way back in 1980s BBC Radio 1 banned most Rock & Metal. Announced it would not be played, except on Top30, regardless of chart position.

Led to Radio1 and Top of the Pops being referred to as Top of the Ni**ers.

Then as now, it’s wrong, bias by omission and censorship and we’re paying for it through BBC Tax law.

BBC needs to be ended, they exist for themselves not the taxed public.

  3. catatonia
    noun
    PSYCHIATRY
abnormality of movement and behaviour arising from a disturbed mental state (typically schizophrenia). It may involve repetitive or purposeless overactivity, or catalepsy, resistance to passive movement, and negativism.

Perhaps her band was aptly named…
