More Scaremongering

Beware of omicron.

The omicron variant could cause a new wave of the pandemic worse than that seen last winter without a new lockdown, modelling by top UK scientists advising the government has found.

Scientists at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) found that the variant could potentially (in other words, probably wont – Ed) cause higher levels of cases and hospitalisations than was seen in January 2021 if no action was taken – with as many as 75,000 deaths before April under the worst scenario

Ah, yes, modelling. Not facts, not science but glorified guesswork using the modern incarnation of the crystal ball, with similar levels of reliability. The same glorified guesswork that has been consistently wrong so far. Indeed, in order to make it properly scary in retrospect, they added two winters together to get their figures and people fell for it.

The researchers, who sit on the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling (SPI-M) or the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), say there is still a “a lot of uncertainty” about omicron’s characteristics and that their research is yet to be peer-reviewed.

Right. So it is evidence free speculation by a bunch of charlatans who get off on the power that lockdowns and stupid, insane rules give them.

She added: “Nobody wants to endure another lockdown…

That’s all that needs to be said. Lockdowns do more harm than good, they don’t stop the spread of the disease and we will be better off going about our business and taking our chances, just as we do every winter with seasonal flu.

but last-resort measures may be required to protect health services…

To say that I am heartily sick of this moronic canard would be an understatement. It is not our role to protect the health service. We pay it to fix us if we break. We have no obligation to it. None whatsoever. The idea that we should put our lives on hold, damage our mental health, trash our economy and delay essential treatments in order to protect this clusterfuck is insanity, frankly.

  1. I read this last night and thought I’d wait for your usual erudite analysis. I must say you don’t disappoint. “Moronic canard”, “evidence free speculation”; I love the English language.

  2. But what can be done about it? We are living in a sea of ignorant half wits who will do anything the government tells them to, in some cases even after acknowledging that they are being fed a pack of lies. If people had refused to cooperate on mass right from the start we wouldn’t be in such a mess now.

      • That’s what I’ve been doing from the start. My only concession has been that I have been unable to work during the lockdowns and there was nothing I could do about that. Otherwise, it’s been a great big “fuck you” to all of the stupid rules.

    • I have to say that the behavioural psychologists in SAGE have pulled a blinder here. What puzzles me is that I could see what they were doing from the off. So could a few others, but the vast majority have been blindsided and just go along with it, despite the obvious contradictions and stupidity. Would people jump off Beachy Head to “save the NHS” just because the government told them it was a new rule? How stupid, how contradictory and how obviously unscientific do they have to be for people to wake up to what they’re doing?

    • This is true. My sister who works in care loses money every time she has to isolate as a consequence of a false positive test. Likewise, if I was to test positive. I’m self employed, so no one is going to compensate me or the client that I will let down. So not getting tested is my way of dealing with it.

It’s also worth mentioning that despite claiming the SEISS, I am still thousands of pounds out of pocket. This is because the SEISS is an average of the last three years profit whereas business costs come out of turnover and those business costs didn’t stop while I was unable to work (with the exception of petrol).

  3. Aliens could potentially land next week, the probability for that is higher than zero so it could happen – why haven’t we prepared for that? I was peoplewatching in a small market town in the north east the other day, masks worn outside has been ramped up again.

  4. “…the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling (SPI-M)”

That’s SPIGOM isn’t it? They can’t even get their acronyms right.

It should be called MSUAPIT. Making stuff up and pretending it’s true.

  5. I went shopping yesterday: no mask and left off my pretend exemption badge. I walked freely around three large retailers and a charity shop with no challenges but did see a “You must” sign on one door and more sheeple than usual were hiding their faces. Maybe no challenges because I’m a grumpy looking old git who looks likely to react badly . . .

  6. “Maybe no challenges because I’m a grumpy looking old git who looks likely to react badly . . .”

This has been said about me by my wife. She says that people find me scary looking and shop staff would be afraid to challenge me. Slim but quite muscular build, shaved head and a sort of angular face, well maybe. My take is that the shops don’t want to drive away customers by enforcing the government’s latest brain fart, they no longer see it as their job.
