Shitty Websites

So I got an email. I raised an eyebrow because I had paid for an Amazon advert to boost my latest book. At first, I thought it had something to do with that. As I’d not heard of this company before, I did a little research.

They have poor ratings and it’s no wonder why. The site looks like it has been designed by a spotty colour blind teenager from the nineties. As far as shitty, amateurish sites go, this one is right up there. They also want you to pay money for premium access. Yeah, right. They had scraped their content from my business Facebook page and were trying to effectively sell it back to me. Bloody cheek.

On the whole, as far as I can see, it’s just a shoddy attempt to make money from gullible people – a bit like those fake Who’s Who things you get in your Spam folder, which is where this one belongs and where it went.

Since I’ve never heard of it and/or had it pop up in any web search here in Sunny New Zealand by the flyover (even for “Mark Elliott”) then that is a case of false advertising if I never saw an example.

But there are so many scams on the internet nowadays. If you send me $20 I’ll show you how to avoid them … Ahem!

  2. When my daughter was helping to run a local theatre group she put together a promotional website for it. I think that it used some kind of template that you inserted your own copy and photographs into. I don’t know if it was free to use but, if not, it can’t have been expensive as the group had a very tight budget. The result was pretty professional looking and was put together by someone with pretty basic computer skills. If this website looked dated and amateurish when such things are available, I would count that as a red flag.

  3. I remember a Jeffery Archer or somebody, short story about a man who creates a magazine containing peoples print adverts that he’s taken from ther press, sends them a copy and bills them for it
    Sounds like a similar scam

  4. There used to be a Business Directory scam, exactly like this one, which put you in a cheap paper book muc like Yellow Pages but smaller and not widely distributed. And they would send an invoice to the unsuspecting scamee.
