Another Petiton

Petitions, frankly, are frequently an attempt by a brain-dead minority to force their views on the rest of us. It’s cheap posturing rather than activism. And so we get another one

A petition to cancel next week’s European Union referendum has surged in support in the days following the killing of MP Jo Cox.

As of lunchtime on Saturday over 20,000 people have signed the statement on the Parliament website in the last few days calling for the vote to be called off at the last minute.

Pretty desperate stuff.

The petitioners argue that Britain is a parliamentary democracy and that parliament, rather than a national plebiscite, should determine whether Britain stays in the EU.

Well, yes, if it was up to parliament, we would remain. However, that  same parliament passed the referendum bill and there are occasions where a plebiscite is the right thing to do. This is one of them. So, frankly, the petitioners who would impose the EU on us without letting us have a say in the matter can stick their petition where the sun doesn’t shine…

  1. My first thought was, what kind of morons would sign a petition for them not to have a say on a matter of national importance? Of course I then realised that it would be those people who are worried that their side might lose. It isn’t themselves that they are hoping to disenfranchise, they would be voting for the status quo anyway. It is of course those who disagree with them that they don’t want to be allowed to vote.
