Humour is Dead

Fer cryin’ out loud.

Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) MP Sammy Wilson has been criticised for a tweet about new Covid-19 rules in Northern Ireland.

It’s a skit on Hark the Herald Angels Sing, referenced to covid. A bit silly, but then, these things always are. That’s the friggin’ point. It’s a bit of humour. But…

Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) leader Mr Beattie said Northern Ireland deserved better and described Mr Wilson as a “fool”.

Someone who doesn’t understand humour, obviously.

At the end of November he tweeted: “Ding dong merrily on high will be replaced this Christmas by ping-dong miserably we sigh.”

Er, yes, it is. Everything is a joking matter. I’ve stood by the four foot making jokes with the BTP over the strewn remains of a jumper. Of course covid is ripe for humour – especially the insane response to it. No harm has been done.

Mark Taylor, chairman of the Royal College of Surgeons, said on Twitter: “Maybe join me in one of the intensive care or emergency departments or when I am cancelling a patient’s surgery as there is no bed (or no members of staff) Mr Wilson and I suspect you would want to delete this tweet below.

Oh, get over yourself. It was a harmless joke. Jesus.

Ray Rafferty from trade union Unison told the BBC Mr Wilson’s comments were insulting to people who had suffered from covid and the relatives of those who had died from it.

“Most of all, it is insulting to the people who are in intensive care,” he said.

“Never before has the health service been stretched so much and I think that rather than give leadership, Sammy Wilson is undermining the efforts of society.

“I think Sammy needs to decide whether he wants to be a comedian or a politician and if it’s a comedian then he should resign as a politician now.”

Is this pillock for real? What is wrong with people? When did humour die? Has it joined common sense in the graveyard alongside such ideas as tolerance, free speech, personal responsibility and a sense of proportion?

Idiots. All of them.

  1. I treasure a cutting from my local paper carrying a statement from the municipal entertainment venue explaining the cancellation of a comic after an offensive ‘tweet’ (whatever one of those is) which ends “Put simply – and however it is intended – racism isn’t funny. Ever” Apart from this being factually incorrect, I can’t help feeling they haven’t quite understood the concept of comedy or entertainment.

      • If it was the comedian Andrew Lawrence, was it the Twitter post he made about the black England players’ failure to score penalties in the Euros final?

It seems that it was racist to point out that the black players missed their penalties while the white players scored theirs. No, it was not racist. It was a fact. The black players *did* miss, and the white players *did* score. It appears that stating facts is now ‘racist’.

        • I’m presuming that is who we are talking about, yes. He was dong comedy as it is supposed to be done – he’s edgy and therefore funny precisely because he challenges the shibboleths. He was also factually correct.

  2. I used to know an ambulance driver and an undertaker. Hard to decide which one had the sickest sense of humour.

  3. So we don’t have to explain the joke after the fact, which never works. In the world of endurance sports a DNF means did not finish and everyone involved knows this. So, the North Lincs Half Marathon passes through a wooded area. On the road is a flat squirrel that really looks like a cartoon character that has been run over by a steam roller. So, I say “I see the squirrel got a DNF.” Nobody laughed, what is wrong with people?
