That’ll Go Well

Iran is threatening to close off the Gibraltar Strait.

Iran has threatened to close off the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea if Israel and its allies continue to commit ‘crimes’ in Gaza.

I realise that our navy isn’t what it once was, but how they think they will pull that one off, I don’t know. After all, it won’t be just our navy dealing with any such blockade.

I know the mullahs are renowned for posturing, but this one is more outrageous than usual. We live in interesting times.

  1. As the article itself points out, there is no indication how the Iranians will do this. Perhaps by disabling a large cargo carrier at the narrowest point. However, seeing as that is eight miles wide and a thousand feet deep, they may be biting off more than they can chew. Suez and the Red Sea on the other hand….

  2. The threats do not consider what will happen if one of the affected countries nearby threaten to launch missiles against Iran until the Strait is opened again.

Once people choose to operate outside the ‘norms’ others can choose to as well. And no-one is likely to put up with the Strait being close on a regular basis.

  3. You’re right that our navy, and military in general, isn’t what it was. But the new Type 45 destroyers, such as HMS Diamond, are among the most advanced ships of their type in the world. The Astute class submarine is THE most advanced attack submarine on the planet. Plus, they have professional crews who are exceptionally good at their jobs. And in alliance with the yanks and other countries, Iran wouldn’t stand a cat in hell’s chance if they decided to actually use their own forces. Personally, I think they’ll just do what they’ve always done, get proxies to carry out terrorist attacks for them, with weapons provided by Iran. But this time it will be on a bigger scale. I do think that our side will have to be careful though. I think Iran, like Russia and China, are looking to engineer an “incident” so that they can play the victim and launch “retaliatory” strikes. A full on war wouldn’t be good for anyone, especially if it goes nuclear, but it would be particularly bad for those three nations. None of them are as strong as they like to make out. And we’ve seen that with Russia.

    • Funny. With what is going on in the West I think it is the West that want to engineer an “incident” and I would believe a third country over my own if there is an incident.

  4. Lots of “Free Palestine graffiti and flags being flown recently in the Islamic People’s Republic of Bradistan…until the Star of David and “Fuck Palestine, Nuke Iran” started getting graffitied over the top. Funnily enough the council sprang into action to erase those sentiments.

I just wish I’d have thought of buying blue spray paint…
